Introduction to kuhndawgblog

Hi!  My name is Marc Kuhn.  I am a teacher in the Ball-Chatham school district.  I teach 7th grade math at Glenwood Middle School in Chatham, Il.  I just completed my 27th year of teaching.  I enjoy reading, playing golf, and watching sports.  I am a huge Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Blackhawks fan.  I am married to Tammi Kuhn and have three children- Steven 21, who is a junior at Illinois State; Ellen, who will be attending the University of Texas at Arlington in the fall; and Emma, who will be an eighth grader at Glenwood Middle School.

  1. I am choosing to follow my esteemed colleagues Dr. Laub and Dr. Wiz. Both are highly interesting individuals and share the same interests in history that I do. I am sure I will end up following more but this is a start.

  4. I have some difficulty with the Google Docs. I uploaded everything ok but had difficulty in sharing with others. I am not sure how to do it. I am struggling with knowing how to do things and what to do. I have been at the sight a number of times but I guess I am not smart enough to figure things out. This is frustrating for me because I want to be able to use these tools in my classroom but until I become more familiar with things I'm not sure I will be able to. It makes me realize how little I know about technology and how much I have to learn in order to be an effective educator when it relates to technology. I will continute to keep trying- but as Forrest Gump says," I am not a very smart man."

  6. I found Twitter useful. I feel as though this can be good for finding educational information although Iam still trying to figure out how it works. I started following three people and am still just trying to learn how things post on my twitter page and how other people who I do not follow end up on my page. This feels a lot like facebook. I am still trying to see myself use this for my math classes, and I think it could work.

  7. I really like google reader. I found it much easier to navigate than some of the other sites. It was easy to add sites and get some of my classmates google reader sites. I am still trying to figure out how I can use this in my classroom. I am teaching math full time this year and I want to find quality sites that will help me in teaching math-mainly lesson plans and how to stuff that can aid me. One of the problems I am running into is trying to locate and keep all these new sites, blogs, etc. organized so that they are easy to find and use. I am okay with locating the sites but I am having trouble locating new things that are relevant to my teaching areas. I guess I need to spend some more time exploring and finding stuff.

  8. I really like Flikr. I found it easy to use and I like the fact that i can post pics on the web for the public to see. I see this being very valuable, particularly for posting pics that I took on our DC trips. I always wanted to find a place where I could post pictures for everyone to see and this looks like a easy to use sight and very manageable. I could see myself using this quite a bit in the classroom as well.

  11. I couldn't figure out how to add my flickr photos to my blog. I added some files from the computer but could not figure out how to add files from my computer. I see the importance of this and really like the idea. I'm frustrated with myself because I cannot figure out how to do some of these things.

  12. The Creative Commons website is really unique and useful. I see it as very valuable for educators. As teachers we are constantly borrowing and using ideas that can be used in the classroom, and Creative Commons gives us an avenue to utlilize these tools without fear of breaking copyright rules. I see myself using this website to obtain information, videos, and lesson plans relating to my teaching areas.

  14. I really liked the Animoto website. It was fun to create a video and it was easy to navigate and use. I see this as very useful in the classroom as teachers and students can create their own videos and it would be a fun way to get students involved in creating thier own videos and I could create videos for classroom use. I would probably buy a subscription in order to create longer videos, but this was a fun tool to use and I see it as being a valuable resource in my classroom.

  15. I liked the wiki sight. There is so much you can do with this. I liked the fact that you could set it up to have pretty much everything you needed for a class- online textbooks, tutorials, videos, lessons from smartboards- the list is endless. I see this as a valuable tool for me in teaching math as I could use a wiki to put information related to my subject matter in one easy place for students to access. I think I would have to play around with it more and become comfortable with it and then introduce it to the students and kind of train them as to how to use it.

  16. I am ok with the voicethread site. I uploaded a picture and added voice to it just to try it. The only problem I am having is where to upload this on my blog. I am not sure how to do this but I am trying. My blog is a mess and I am having trouble navigating it.
As for voice thread itself, I am lukewarm with it as to how it can be used in the classroom. I can see where kids can put inappropriate comments on the pictures if not supervised. Can they do this at home and make inapporpriate comments? I guess I'm just trying to figure out the value of using this in a math class. I'm not sure but I'm willing to try it.
